Hyperopia

Hyperopia, commonly known as farsightedness, is a refractive error that causes blurry up-close vision while distance vision remains clear. It’s caused by the eyeball being too short or the cornea being too flat. Fortunately, it can be easily corrected with glasses, contact lenses, and in some cases, LASIK.

Astigmatism

Astigmatism is caused by an irregularly shaped cornea and results in distorted and blurry vision, making it difficult to see both near and far objects clearly. Prescription glasses and specialized contact lenses called toric lenses can correct astigmatism. LASIK may be effective depending on the type.

Presbyopia

Presbyopia, age-related farsightedness, is a gradual process caused by aging that affects the eye’s ability to focus on nearby objects, making reading and other close-up tasks challenging. Bifocals and multifocal glasses and contacts can correct it.

Myopia

Myopia (nearsightedness) causes distant objects to appear blurry, while close-up objects remain clear. Glasses and contact lenses correct myopia. If a candidate qualifies, LASIK can offer a more permanent solution for myopia.

Glaucoma

Glaucoma is a group of progressive eye diseases that damage the optic nerve, often due to increased intraocular eye pressure, leading to irreversible vision loss if left untreated.

Open-angle and angle-closure glaucoma are the most prevalent types of glaucoma, with open-angle glaucoma being less severe and showing no symptoms until its advanced stages. On the other hand, angle-closure glaucoma causes severe symptoms such as redness, blurry vision, halo vision, and nausea. Early diagnosis and treatment is key for preventing vision loss.

Cataracts

Cataracts, a common age-related condition, cause the eye’s lens to become cloudy, leading to blurred vision and decreased visual clarity. This condition can be fixed with cataract surgery, where the natural lens is removed and replaced with an intraocular lens (IOL).

Macular Degeneration

Macular degeneration is a progressive eye disease that causes the central part of the retina to lose its ability to function properly. Wet macular degeneration causes more severe symptoms compared to its dry form and is characterized by abnormal blood vessels growing and leaking fluid under the macula, leading to sudden vision changes and distortions. Dry macular degeneration develops more gradually as the macula thins and breaks down over time. Dark sports in the central vision, blurry and distorted vision are common symptoms of this eye disease. Early detection and proactive management are vital for preserving remaining vision.
